Are Energy Drinks Dangerous?

It goes without saying that there’s been a lot of negative publicity as of late surrounding mainstream energy drinks. Just last week the U.S. FDA announced it is investigating five deaths and one non-fatal heart attack linked to Monster Energy Drink. While such occurrences are extremely rare – and without a doubt unfortunate – it’s premature to tell if high doses of caffeine were the culprit, or whether there were other contributing factors.

So here’s what we do know: Caffeine in and of itself isn’t dangerous. In fact, study after study show that modest amounts of caffeine have positive health benefits. The question is, how much caffeine is good for us, and at what level does it become unsafe? There’s no simple answer, as factors such as age, weight and overall health come into play. What is unsettling is the fact that more than ½ the energy market consists of children and young adults. Many kids and adolescents are consuming several highly-caffeinated beverages each day, which we’re fairly certain isn’t a good thing.

Here’s something else to ponder: Did you know that most energy drinks are classified as dietary supplements, which aren’t closely scrutinized by the FDA as would be a drug? As a supplement, energy drink companies can get away with being vague when it comes to calling out their ingredient levels. Moreover, widely used ingredients like taurine don’t have established recommended dosages, nor are they backed by credible scientific research. And finally, many energy drink companies don’t feel the need to list caffeine levels on their packaging, websites or marketing communications, making it virtually impossible for consumers to know how much caffeine they’re ingesting.
